617. 196 What I Learned About Empty Nest Syndrome.

This paper discusses the Empty Nest Syndrome. Empty-nest syndrome is a 'condition' that can affect a woman or man around the time that one or more of her children leave home. It can also occur when a child gets married, because matrimony is a clear signal that mom and dad are no longer needed in the same way as they were before. I also learned that the "empty nest" feeling doesn't always come right away. Sometimes it takes a while for it to kick in. I also learned that empty nest syndrome isn't something felt by everyone. But it is a "real" feeling. This is a subject that deserves attention.

618. 201 Estrogen Replacement Therapy And Osteoporosis: Is The Public Receiving Conflicting Information?

This paper discusses estrogen replacement therapy and Osteoporosis. With the aging population growing at a swift rate and female baby boomers entering or experiencing menopause in growing numbers, osteoporosis has gained increasing attention. It is estimated that 25-30% of U.S. Caucasian women will suffer a fracture related to osteoporosis, and that 85% of the overall female population will develop osteoporosis (Graham & Gleit, 1984). Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) has been widely used and discussed as a method for treating osteoporosis. In this paper, the implications of ERT in osteoporosis will be examined through contrast and comparison of D. Franklin's magazine article, "Boning Up", and various medical journal articles.

619. 206 Effect of Fatigue on Cognitive Performance.

This paper researches and describes the effects of fatigue on cognitive performance, including the effects noted on persons in the aviation arena. The term, "fatigue," has yet to be defined in a concrete fashion. Fatigue, as addressed in human performance literature, refers to "deterioration in human performance, arising as a consequence of several potential factors, including sleepiness." Sleepiness, in contrast, has a more precise definition: "Sleepiness, according to an emerging consensus among sleep researchers and clinicians, is a basic physiological state (like) hunger or thirst. Deprivation or restriction of sleep increases sleepiness and as hunger or thirst is reversible by eating or drinking, respectively, sleep reverses sleepiness" (Akerstedt, T., Gillberg, M, 1990).

620. 219 Genetic Testing.

This paper argues for genetic testing and its purposes. Prenatal diagnosis serves a variety of purposes and I believe in its fundamental purpose it is good. In some cases, prenatal genetic testing can lead to timely medical intervention to mitigate or eliminate disease such as with congenital adrenal hyperplasia or a-thalassemia. In some cases, prenatal diagnosis reveals a lethal condition, such as anencephaly, trisomy 13, or trisomy 18. The choice to do genetic testing in the beginning is always individual. My choice, however, would be to have it done. I'm for genetic testing for several reasons. Prenatal diagnosis allows families and medical professionals to prepare for the care of a child with special needs. This may be preparing neonatal care or preparing emotionally for the arrival of a special needs child. Prenatal diagnosis of a disease may also give parents time to educate themselves on the disorder of their child. Genetic testing also gives parents the option of terminating a pregnancy, after considering the impact of the diagnosis in the context of their cultural beliefs and personal situation.

621. 245 Orem's Self-Care Model: A Professional Nursing Practice Model.

This paper discusses Orem's Self-Care Model. Nursing theory is an organized and systematic articulation of a set of statements related to questions in the discipline of nursing. (Caley, p. 302, 1980) The model presented by Dorothea Orem is based on the idea that as human beings, we are engaged in self-care activities that allow us to maintain a state of good health. Orem defines health as "a state of a person that is characterized by soundness or wholeness of developed human structures and of bodily and mental functioning" (Coleman, p. 325, 1980) Utilization of Orem's concepts allows the nurse freedom to develop their own style practice to best meet the self-care needs of any patient.

623. 261 Primary Health Care: An Interdisciplinary Team Approach Toward The Aging Population.

The topic of this paper is primary health care: an interdisciplinary team approach toward the aging population. It has been estimated that by the year 2000, approximately 20% of our population will be age 65 or over, with up to 95% continuing to live in our communities. (Krieger, 1981). This aging population presents unique challenges to primary health care providers. For instance, approximately 80% of the elderly experience multiple chronic diseases, such as arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. Further, 50% have activity limitations ranging from sensory loss and cognitive impairment to locomotors dysfunction. (Kee, 1984) In addition to physiological changes and disease processes, aging presents unique social, psychological, cultural, economical, and environmental factors, which must be addressed when providing primary health care. Issues surrounding unfounded prejudices towards the elderly by the health care system further complicate geriatric care.
